Some Tips for Potty Training Success: What Worked For Us
Look for signs of readinessLeading up to potty-training, look for signs that your child is ready. For example, our son started keeping his diaper dry while out for extended periods of time and overnight. He also expressed interest in the potty seat we had purchased for him. We simply bought it and placed it in the bathroom, letting him know it was there. No pressure.
PrepareWhen you get started, have all you think you might need. The first few days of potty training can be a lot of work. Some parents like to start with a potty chair, or a seat that fits over the existing toilet. Or, you may just want to start with a step-stool up to the big potty - whatever works best for your child! Pick up essentials like Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants, incentives that will motivate your child, like stickers or other rewards.
Use an incentive based systemWe used a chart and stickers, with an end result reward, such as a toy or a trip to a place of his choice. At first, he was rewarded for simply trying to use his potty, then for successful attempts and then for telling us he had to go. We built on our son's successes.
Help your child feel successful through the ups and downsHuggies Pull-Ups have been terrific during our son's potty training. I love the easy open sides and the fit is just like underwear - making them easy for our son to get on and off. My son loves the Disney Cars Design. While potty training, there will be ups and downs, so Huggies Pull-Ups help your child feeling successful, especially as they learn how to tell you when they need to go. Accidents were upsetting for our son, and with the Pull-Ups, he was able to feel successful and eventually learned to get to the bathroom in time!
Keep it simpleAt one point in our training, I realized we were beginning to focus TOO much on the potty training. It was all we talked about and focused on with our son and I did not want him getting turned off by the constant focus. We took a step back and let it happen a bit more naturally. In the end, he did better without potty training being the #1 focus.
You can buy Huggies Pull-Ups both in store and online from Walmart.com for the low rollback price of just $8.97! I went to the store this time, but I do love that you can shop online and have it shipped to store or your home. I was able to stock up on Pull-Ups and flushable wipes with such a great price!
